Archetypes are a collection of symbols and innate knowledge that come from the collective unconscious. Jung did not believe that humans were born a blank slate (tabula rasa.)Instead, he believed that all of the knowledge and experiences of all humankind was passed down from generation to generation, including archetypes.

The number of archetypes that may exist within human society is limitless. As discussion around archetypes evolved, even past Jung’s death, the terms “archetype,” “archetype-as-such,” and “archetypal images” have become synonymous with each other. Archetypes have been used to explain concepts in storytelling, filmmaking, the retelling of historical events, and even marketing.
